The anthem is a Waka Poem from the Heian period, which was later sung to a melody from the Meiji Era

Kimi ga yo wa
Chiyo ni
yachiyo ni
Sazare ishi no
Iwao to narite
Koke no musu made

English Translation

May your reign
Continue for a thousand years.
And last for eight thousand of generations
Until pebbles
Turn into boulders
And covered with Moss

Kimi ga yo score
